I’ve been very excited about sharing this week’s heroine, some of you may have heard of her, but many of you won’t and I defy you to show me a more inspiring and cool 11 year old girl. Maisy at an age when most of us lived in happy little bubbles of pop music, friendship bracelets and no sense of the real world, totally has her head screwed on and has raised over £1,000 for charity.
She first cut her hair at the age of 8 when a family friend was diagnosed with cancer. She donated her hair to The Little Princess Trust, a charity which makes wigs for children who have lost their hair due to cancer treatment. Earlier this year, Maisy’s 1 year old cousin was also diagnosed with cancer and taking it one step further, she had her entire head shaved, the money raised was donated to Macmillan and the hair once again to the Little Princess Trust. Her next move is to organise an event to raise money for the research into children’s cancer, as less funding is put into this. Maisy’s mother says “she is a strong minded feminist, a body positive advocate and going to set up a blog for her illustrations and cartoons one day”. As a mother of a young daughter myself, I can only imagine how proud Maisy’s mother must feel. At such a young age she is so clued up, more than many of us are now and well, all I can say is this girl is one to watch. You can donate to Maisy’s Just Giving page here, do it in your daughter’s name, as little or as much as you can, Maisy will be thrilled. Interview follows…
Who’s in your family? The people in my very crazy family are My mum @emsiam (who I love loads ) my Dad (who is super funny ) and my really annoying little sister. We also have a hyper dog and a grumpy cat!
Who is your best friend? I don’t have one particular best friend I have a small group who are all epic in their own ways.
Tell us about your typical weekend. I love being outdoors climbing trees , exploring streams, and pretending to be Katniss Everdeen! I’m super into science and got a microscope for my birthday which I love, I’m currently keeping some tardigrades (microscopic water bears) and enjoy studying them. Most often I will be found somewhere drawing, doodling or reading.
What is your favourite meal? SUSHI!!!! I especially love cucumber or tuna maki, followed by doriyaki, yum!!!
Tell us about your favourite place in your neighbourhood. I love visiting our local market hall in Shrewsbury, its full of interesting people and stalls. My favourite stall is the vintage clothes stall that sells converse and Dr Martens. The Birds Nest Café is my favourite place to grab something to eat in there, its so cool!
What’s your favourite song? Black or White, Michael Jackson.
Do you have any guilty pleasures? Listening to Disney tunes on Spotify!
Tell us 3 things you could not live without. My family, Cadburys Oreo bars, Harry Potter books.
Tell us a secret about yourself. I’ve slept with my cuddly toy Hunka Munka every day since I was one (he has had a LOT of repairs 🙂 )
What would you like to be doing 10 years from now? I would like to be an illustrator, work with charities, travel and see the world!
If you could have dinner with any 3 women, fictional, real, dead or alive, who would they be? Malala Yousafzai, Jennifer Lawrence and Emma Watson.
Lastly, who would you nominate to be a heroine? I would nominate Sarah Anderson @sarahandersencomics on instagram. She posts cute and funny and inspirational cartoons.
Thank you so much for sharing Maisy, your answers are so much fun (though following a quick google search of ‘tardigrades’ I hate you, they’re going to give me nightmares lol…). I hope your fundraising continues to go well and I for one will continue to follow you to see what you do next, you’re a very cool girl and will be a remarkable young woman one day.
Here’s that link again guys if any of you wish to donate.
Thanks for reading, stay tuned for the next Heroine…
